Description

The Church of San Valentino rises in the castle of the same name in the area of Scheggino, and dominates the Nera Valley.

The devotional building, dedicated to the holy Bishop of Terni known for being the protector of couples in love, was built around the early 13th century and preserves the essential Romanesque aspects in its front.

The austere façade has only two openings: the rectangular portal surmounted by a large limestone architrave, probably originating from a pre-existing building, and the small double-mullioned window which opens above it.

The interior is a rare example of a Romanesque interior which has preserved the fresco decoration with which it was enriched, at different times, to clad the walls almost entirely. The frescoes on the bottom wall are datable to around the late 14th century or to the early next century.

On the 14th February each year, this romantic church celebrates the feast of St. Valentine and couples who celebrate their wedding anniversary renew their reciprocal “promise of love” according to the ancient rite which saw five priests celebrate the mass.
