Description
The Church of San Nicola is located in the municipality of Scheggino.
The building has been documented since 1210 and was enlarged and renovated between the 16th and 17th centuries. The façade with large portico, the division into three naves and the cycle of frescoes inside are of this period.
Inside, the stucco decoration of the 18th century fits naturally and elegantly into the original 16th century three-nave structure, divided by stone columns. The right nave features a Madonna of the Suffrage, canvas of the 17th century, with the iconographic curiosity of the commissioning party who pours water from a vase onto the flames of Purgatory.
In the chapel to the right of the high altar, Madonna in Glory and the Saints John the Evangelist in oleo, James, Rocco, Sebastian and Nicholas of Bari, canvas by Guidobaldo Abbatini (1644) which, like many works present in this area, also came from Rome. This was thanks to the mediation of Cardinal Poli, to whom the farmers of Scheggino had turned for help and counsel.
In the apse, Coronation of Mary, Saints John the Baptist and Nicholas and Crib, frescoes by Giovanni di Girolamo (1526) and Piermarino di Giacomo (1533), followers of Spagna. In the chapel to the left, Madonna of the Rosary by Perino Cesarei (1595). In the left nave, St. Philip Neri, canvas of the 18th century. On the counter-façade, organ of the 19th century.
