Description
The only church dedicated to San Salvatore stands in the middle of town of Paganelli, near a fountain that still had its old elements until the 1990s. Originally dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, it started being called San Salvatore following the devotion given to an image of the Holy Face.
It was resized following its destruction in the 18th century, but it still has three pilasters from the 16th-century building. The high altar is dedicated to the Holy Face of Jesus, an accurate replica (17th cent.) of the image at the Vatican basilica. The altar on the right has a wooden Madonna; the one on the left, a statue of St. Joseph (16th cent.). The former represents a pair of brigands who assaulted a horseman invoking the Holy Face near San Scolastica; the latter, the narrow escape of a sick woman praying to Saints Peter and Paul.
Preserved in the sacristy is the bay of the Madonna of the Oak, removed after 1979.
