Description
The Church of San Matteo, in the hamlet of Piè del Colle, was restored in 1993.
Very humble on the outside, it is of some interest. The wooden case is from the early 1600s. The 18th-century scagliola altar frontal is from another church. On the right of the altar there is a frescoed niche with the Madonna of Mercy between Saints Matthew and Anthony of Padua. Under the arch are Saints Sebastian and Rocco, Anthony of Padua and Anthony Abbot, Christ crowned with thorns and another small figure, all attributed to Francesco Sparapane and his brothers (1526). A procession of saints includes James the Greater, Vincent Ferrer, Bernardine of Siena (1466), by Antonio Sparapane.
The basin near the side door, carved into ribs and diamond points, was the baptismal font of the Church of Santa Maria di Castelfranco and was used as the basin of a public fountain in past years. It rests on a carved block of stone, probably part of a Roman fountain.
