Description
The Church of San Nicola, patron saint of Monteleone of Spoleto, was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1703; some sculptural fragments from the original construction are preserved in the cloister of the Church of San Francesco.
Inside, the single nave is covered by a wood ceiling. It features canvases with St. Anthony of Padua, Magdalene, St. Isidore, St. John Beheaded by Giuseppe Ghezzi.
Since time immemorial, on the day before the feast of Nicholas, on 5th December at 12 noon, the church rectory hosts the ritual ceremony, in which the priest distributes a bowl of spelt soup, with lean meat sauce, starting with the children. This is in agreement with the hagiographic tradition that sees St. Nicholas as the dispenser of goods and the protector of children, in charge of delivering gifts; a task which has now fallen, indirectly, into the hands of Father Christmas.
