Description
The work to construct the railway line (51 km long) began in 1909 and was completed in 1926 (the year in which it began operation).
The design of the route proved to be a very difficult task for the time: 19 tunnels, 24 bridges and viaducts, all constructed using advanced engineering and prestigious architectural design, with helical line sections inside the mountain, slopes of up to 45° in the section between Spoleto and the River Nera valley.
The Spoleto-Norcia line is a fascinating route along its entire length, especially in this area with the luxuriant, riparian vegetation of the harsh valley bottom which contrasts chromatically with the holm oaks of the steep and impervious rocky slopes.
Today, no longer in use, the Transport Ministry decreed its disuse in 1968, it is still possible to traverse most of its route on foot or by mountain bike.
