Description
Montefiorello is a small castle in the town of Vallo di Nera.
The settlement today looks like a linear relay village, through which runs the mountain road.
The importance of the mountain road is confirmed by the existence along its path of the parish church of Paterno and of numerous, very ancient, fortified towns, even though the castles’ current appearance dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries.
From Paterno along a path which ran lower down compared with the current road, the road went uphill to Montefiorello. In this area the complex geological structure creates remarkable, perpetual springs, such as the one at Fontecanale, just above Montefiorello, from where the waste water of the compact, limestone slopes flows out on a waterproof bed of marlstone from Mount Galenne and Mount Pianciano.
