Description
Popoli: this place name comes from “populus” (poplar) or derived from the Umbrian “puplum”, presumably of Etruscan origin.
It is a very small settlement on the edge of the plain. The part near the church of San Pietro is probably the oldest and the buildings are rural. In 1916 a funeral stone was discovered that suggests the presence of a place of worship and it now acts as the base for the altar. A funeral epigraph can be seen in the stone of the fountain along the old mule track.
