San Giorgio stands along one of the mountain paths that connected the Cascia area with Norcia around the fifteenth century church of the same name, which for its size, structure and architecture is in complete contrast to the modest buildings of the town.

Many buildings have been recently strengthened after the earthquake of 1964. Rebuilding was ingenuously inspired by an attempt to adapt to the old by using walls in open stone work which have been cut through at various levels by bands of cement dictated by antiseismic regulations. A fair amount of activity in the sector of cattle rearing has required the construction of large, modern cowsheds at the edge of the town.

Of the ancient castle of San Giorgio mentioned as far back as the 12th century, there remains only a high tower that overlooks the Corno valley below and a few ruins which hint at the original size and quality of the fortified settlement.
