Vallo di Nera - The Old Spoleto-Norcia railway line
Lenght: Km 7 (Round trips)
Difficulty: Beginners
Duration: From 2 to 4 hours
Interesting: Historic - Naturalistic
Park your car along the SS 209 Valnerina near the bar at Piedipaterno and walk towards the Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo, just beyond the little bridge over the Nera River. The path runs flat close to the riverbank, alongside the old Spoleto-Norcia railway line. This lovely walk passes through the luxuriant riverside vegetation of the narrow valley bottom, in contrast with the holm oak groves on the rocky, impervious slopes. If you observe the river carefully, you may catch a glimpse of the queen of these waters, the brown river trout. Towards the end of our itinerary we come to a tunnel and the railway signal boxes of “La Romita” and “Passo Stretto”, both of which have recently been rebuilt by the local authorities. After a brief stop, follow the path once again from Passo Stretto in the opposite direction to get back to your point of departure, which will now become your point of arrival. Enjoy the view from here of the little village of Paterno, an ancient hilltop castle perched above the Nera Valley.
How To Get There:
It runs down to take the SP 472, turning right, on the ss 209 - Valnerina, after about 2.5 km you reach Piedipaterno.
