Scheggino - The walk of Valcasana
Lenght: Km 6 (Round trips)
Difficulty: Challenging
Duration: From 4 to 8 hours
Interesting: Nature
Part of this walk follows the migratory path and the ironworks road. The walk rises steeply so be careful. When you have parked your car in Piazza del Mercato opposite the 17° century Villa Poli, cross the iron bridge over the River Nera. Go straight on up Via del Borgo and walk under an elegant loggia with two arches. Come out through Porta Valcasana, the ancient access road to the village, and into the luxuriously green park full of springs and aquatic vegetation. Keep to the right and walk along the road which turns into a dirt track shortly after the campsite. When you come to a fence with wooden poles on your left, the track veers uphill to the right (red and white trail sign). Keep to the dirt track uphill to just below Piano delle Melette (walk no. 4). To your right you can see Colle Casa (893 m a.s.l.), to your left lies Punta Moricone (1,119 m a.s.l.). Walk past the Fonte Acqua Santa and you will soon reach the plateau surrounded by the “Great walls” of Mount Civitella and the “craggy Cliffs” of Mount Coscerno; to the left lies the castle of Caso. Once you have had a good rest, retrace your steps as far as Scheggino.
How to get there
Exit from the SS 209 at Scheggino and park your car in Piazza del Mercato.
