Poggiodomo - Hermitage of Madonna della Stella
Lenght: Km 4,3 (Round trips)
Difficulty: Beginners
Duration: From 2 to 4 hours
Interesting: Historic - Nature
Leave the SP 470 which links Poggiodomo and Borgo Cerreto, and go as far as the fork for Roccatamburo where you can leave your car. This easy walk is all on the flat along a very clear dirt track. Walk along with the rock face on your right and the river on your left until you reach the foot of the hermitage. Tales of the hermitage date back to the 8th century when the Monastery of San Benedetto in faucibus, or vallibus, was built by the Dukes of Spoleto on the site where important paths to Spoleto converged in order to assist the work of converting the people of the mountains. When the Benedictine monks left, the site was handed over to the Augustinian Order of Cascia and in 1308 it was handed over to the monks Andrea and Giovanni from Cascia. Abandoned once again, the place became famous in 1823 after a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary was discovered. After your visit to the ancient cells of the hermits, climb up along the stream as far as the refreshing little waterfall.
How to get there:
Take the SS 470 towards Borgo Cerreto and continue for approx. 5 km as far as the turning on the left (tourist road sign for Madonna della Stella).
