Preci - Ascended to the Monte Lungo
Lenght: Km 6,5 (Round Trips)
Difficulty: Challenging
Duration: From 4 to 8 hours
Interesting: Nature
The starting point for this walk in the mountains is the village of Collescille, situated at 944 m a.s.l. on the old path that linked Preci and Visso. This was one of several villages whose task it was to defend the Abbey of Sant’Eutizio below. When you get to the village, leave the car near the bend from where you will have a splendid view over the valley. Walk up the road paved in stone as far as the 16th century church of S. Maria Assunta, where you can find a polychromatic, wooden statue of the Madonna del Castello, the work of the Maestro of the Madonna di Macereto (second half of the 15th century). Once past the village, the road becomes a dirt track and rises steadily up the harsh, south side of Mount Moricone to the foot of a watchtower. For the first 2 km the slope below the road is barren and uneven, with crags interspersed with gorse, juniper and hornbeams. As you continue uphill, take a look at the Campiana Valley on your right and when you get to a fork at the foot of Casale Viola, turn right and follow the trail signs. After a short while you will already be on the meadows of the summit of Mount Lungo (1,241 m). Continue along the well-trodden path and enjoy the magnificent view to the south-east of part of the mountain chain of the Umbrian Sibillini mountains. After a well-earned rest, retrace your steps back down to Collescille.
How to get there
Take the SP 476 towards Norcia. After approx. 2.5 km turn left to the abbey of Sant’Eutizio and Collescille.
