Description
Cerreto di Spoleto is a replica watches castle-town of medieval origin that was built on a pre-existing settlement on San Sebastiano hill. The town’s name derivedfrom the widespread presence of turkey oaks ("cerro"), which also feature in Cerreto’s coat of arms.
The castle-town`s history began in the early 12th century when it liberated itself from the rules of Ponte to become a free commune under Church protection, exploiting its strategic position on the border between the Communes of Spoleto, Cascia, Norcia and the Duchy of Camerino.
The aristocratìc little palazzos in the town, particularly in the main square dedicated to Giovanni Gioviano Pontano (1429-1503), are reminders of the different perìods in the towns glorious past. Pantano was a humanist poet and politician born in Cerreto di Spoleto who lived in the Court of Aragon.
